Evening Habits That Make Your Home Feel Peaceful and Restful

Evening Habits That Make Your Home Feel Peaceful and Restful

Your home has the ability to influence how relaxing, calming, and restful your evenings will feel. As you close out the last of your daily activities, you would probably love your house to be a place where you can escape the chaos of the world outside rather than adding to the chaos. And yet, harsh lighting, scattered messes and humming TVs can be difficult to overcome, making unwinding, an almost impossible task.

Fortunately, you don't have to spend a fortune or redecorate to create a calming environment. Simply developing some new evening routines is a great first step toward creating a softer, quieter, and more restful feeling environment. When practiced consistently, these small evening rituals will help your home feel more soft, quiet and restful.

Softening the Lighting

One of the simplest things you can do to transform your homes ambiance in the evening hours is through its lighting. Overhead lighting can be quite harsh, and can contribute to feelings of tension or anxiety at the end of a long day. However, softer lighting creates a warm and inviting ambiance in your living space.

Instead of leaving the overhead lights on and illuminating your entire living space, consider turning them off and replacing them with soft, ambient lighting from lamps (table lamps, floor lamps, etc.) or other sources. Using candles can also create a wonderful transition between the active part of your day and preparing for sleep.

These simple adjustments can produce a total transformation of your homes' overall vibe and calmness in just minutes.

Quick Reset of Your Space

It's much easier to relax in a space that feels organized, neat and "together." This does not mean that you have to perform a full cleaning each evening; however, taking just a few minutes to tidy up will greatly improve your chances of achieving a state of relaxation in the same amount of time.

For example, take 5-10 minutes to quickly pick up the room by folding your blankets and pillows, clearing your coffee mug and/or dirty dishes from earlier in the day, and putting away items that were left lying about throughout the day. Even a quick tidy can create a very peaceful and non-chaoic space.

In addition, when your surroundings begin to feel more relaxed and peaceful, so will you. Moreover, you'll wake up to a cleaner space the next morning which will give you an immediate sense of ease at the beginning of your day.

Reduce Background Noise

As stated previously, a home may appear serene but may still be overwhelming due to excessive amounts of noise. Televisions playing in the background, cell phones buzzing constantly, and numerous devices continuously operating simultaneously can all contribute to a restless atmosphere without being fully conscious of it.

In the evenings, try eliminating any unnecessary background noise. Turn off anything you're no longer actively using. Place your phone on silent for a short period of time. Turn down the volume on the TV or turn it off altogether if nobody was seriously paying attention to it anyway. If you prefer having some background noise, try using softer music or natural sounds (like rain) rather than loud noises.

Complete silence is not required...you merely desire your home to seem less busy.

Utilize Scent to Shift Mood

Smell is another detail that can significantly impact how your room feels. A space that is filled with pleasant, soothing scents typically evokes feelings of calm immediately upon entering the space.

To create this type of atmosphere in your home, you could burn scented candles (preferably ones with soft fragrances), utilize an essential oil diffuser or simply crack open a window for a couple of minutes to allow fresh air into the space. Some popular scents for evening hours include lavender, chamomile, vanilla and eucalyptus.

Again, do not seek to overwhelm your senses with scent. A subtle scent is usually sufficient to make a space feel more peaceful and welcoming.

Provide Comfort Through Texture

A tranquil home should also provide physical comfort in addition to appearing peaceful. Soft textures are one simple way to bring this comfort element into play in everyday life.

Throwing a cozy blanket across the back of the couch, keeping a throw nearby or tossing additional pillows onto your favorite reading chair can all add warmth, softness and invite relaxation into the space. These minor gestures also promote you to relax and stay seated rather than continuing to think and act as though you are working all evening.

Providing comfort is important when attempting to create a home that fosters relaxation.
